The thing about the internet is, I don’t need to go door to door or shout on a street corner to tell you. Drug Church has a new video for the first song “But Does It Work?” from their upcoming record Swell. Behold:

It’s yet another “variation on a theme” we’ve seen a great deal from the band: unfiltered pessimism. On many of the songs on their excellent debut album, Paul Walker, vocalist Patrick Kindlon shouted about this in one way or another (“entropy’s the natural state of things;” “everything went tits up;” “crush ambition, collect and burn the pieces”).

The talk-singing Kindlon has employed in Self Defense Family the last few years creeps in on this song, giving it a feel of both freshness and resignation. No subject is immune from the accusation of ‘not working:’ the mundane tasks of everyday life, the idea of bettering oneself, democracy, relationships (hilariously, lesbianism is the only potential exception).

I’m inclined to agree, but for now, this song is working pretty well for me.

Swell is due out in 2015 on No Sleep Records.
