Irish-blooded, English-hearted singer Morrissey has revealed that the source of his ongoing health issues is actually an underlying cancer. He has cancelled various shows in the past few years, including almost his entire North American tour. These cancellations were previously attributed to Barrett’s esophagus (a pre-cancerous condition) and pneumonia (likely a result of a weakened immune system).
Morrissey, in his typical self-deprecating style, has taken this with a profoundly brave – or inconsequential – attitude (“If I die, then I die. And if I don’t, then I don’t … I’m not going to worry about that, I’ll rest when I’m dead,” he reportedly said). This illness does put his recent and highly successful Autobiography in a new light. Though the former Smiths frontman may require a respite from touring and recording so as to aid his recovery, he may continue his creative output in the form of a novel reportedly in the works.
I speak for everyone at Abandon Hip when I wish Morrissey a speedy recovery and a heartfelt thanks for all the songs that saved our lives.
